Six people were killed in a shooting and stabbing attack in Tel Aviv, police in Israel confirmed.

At least nine other people were reportedly injured and several are in critical condition.

Police said the attack began in a train carriage and continued on the platform. Images posted on social media showed the gunman shooting at passers-by in the Jaffa area.

Police said two attackers were “neutralized” by members of the public and described the motive as “terror.”

Details of the attack are still unclear and the identity of the perpetrators has not been revealed.

Some Israeli media previously reported the death toll at eight, although it is unclear whether this included the attackers.

The shooting occurred shortly before an Iranian missile attack on Israel began.

Shortly after the shooting, rockets and anti-aircraft missiles could be seen in the air above the crime scene.
